Attack on SPLA-IO Post in Namurle Leaves Four Soldiers Dead and Civilians Captured

Namurle- In a recent attack on 12/02/2024, the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) launched an assault on an SPLA-IO post, resulting in the deaths of four SPLA-IO soldiers and one civilian. The incident has raised concerns about the escalating violence in the region.

The attack also led to the capture of five individuals, including three SPLA-IO soldiers and two civilians. The names of the captured soldiers have been identified as Chief Joseph Ayong Adol, Oyai James Rjekiel, Mayola, Anthony, and Makir Ayom Manual. Additionally, five other civilians were taken from a holding cell of the local chiefs, but their identities have not yet been released.

The SPLA-IO has condemned the attack and is demanding the immediate release of the captured soldiers and civilians. The group has called upon the Joint Defense Board (JDB) Co-Chairs to intervene and put an end to the continuous intentional violations occurring in the area.

The incident has further strained the already fragile peace agreement between the SSPDF and the SPLA-IO. Both sides had previously agreed to a ceasefire, but this attack has reignited tensions and threatens to undermine the progress made towards peace in the region.

Local authorities have expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in Namurle and have called for increased efforts to de-escalate the violence. The government has yet to issue an official statement regarding the incident.

The international community has also voiced its concern over the recent attack and the ongoing violence in South Sudan. Human rights organizations are calling for an independent investigation into the incident and for those responsible to be held accountable for their actions.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the JDB Co-Chairs and the government will respond to the SPLA-IO’s demands and address the escalating violence in Namurle. The international community will be closely monitoring the developments and urging all parties involved to prioritize peace and stability in the region.
