A significant milestone was reached on Friday as the Central Equatoria state government successfully held the first General Elections for the Butchers Union, electing Angelo Wani Nyombe as the new chairperson. The election saw participation from representatives across six counties, although Yei County abstained from the voting process.

According to the election committee, out of 134 registered voters, 106 turned out to support their preferred candidates in a closely contested race. The event was framed under the theme “Vote Today, have a Better Tomorrow,” emphasizing the importance of civic engagement for a brighter future.

In his keynote address, Deputy Governor Paulino Lokudu Obede underscored the importance of public order and accountability in the newly elected chairperson’s responsibilities. “We urge the Butchers Union to work hand in hand with the government to address the pressing issue of high meat prices in markets across the state,” he stated, affirming the government’s commitment to support the union in its endeavors.

Lokudu also stressed the need for the Butchers Union to respect its leadership and adhere to the established laws, steering clear of political entanglements. This guidance aims to ensure that the union can function effectively and respond to any challenges it encounters in delivering essential services to the community.

The Minister for Animal Resources, Fisheries, and Tourism, Hon. Alex Latio, commended the Butchers Union for taking bold steps toward reorganization through these elections. He advised the new chairperson to establish a formal office in collaboration with his ministry to uphold high standards within the Butchers Union.

In response to his election, Angelo Wani Nyombe expressed his commitment to addressing the issues that face butchers and the broader community. He called upon his fellow union members to unify efforts, emphasizing the need for collaboration to regulate meat prices in local markets, ensuring affordability for families.

The elections marked a crucial step toward enhancing the operational standards of the Butchers Union, and the newly elected leadership is hopeful that they will lead to improvements that resonate with the citizens of Central Equatoria state. As the union embarks on this new chapter, the collective goal remains clear: to serve the community effectively and sustainably.
