CEPO Calls for Legal Process to Extend Transitional Period

In response to the announcement made by the Honorable Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Mr. Edmond Yakani, Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), raised concerns regarding the extension of the transitional period.

Yakani emphasized the importance of following legal procedures to secure a complete extension of the transitional period for two additional years. He outlined the necessary steps, including obtaining support from party signatories to the revitalized peace agreement and securing endorsement from various key bodies such as the Council of Ministers and the Parliament.

He also highlighted the need for amendments to the electoral law in order to postpone the upcoming elections to December 22, 2024. Yakani stressed that these legal processes must be carried out diligently and within the specified timelines to avoid any potential disruptions to the government’s operations.

In his appeal to the country’s leadership, Yakani urged for a concerted effort to ensure that all necessary legal actions are taken promptly to extend the transitional period and amend the electoral laws. He warned that failure to adhere to these legal requirements could result in the dissolution of the government and the formation of an interim administration.

Yakani concluded by emphasizing the importance of upholding legal procedures and ensuring transparency in the decision-making process to maintain stability and progress in the country.
