CEPO Calls for Urgent Action Against Politicians Fueling Violence in South Sudan
Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), has made an impassioned plea to the South Sudanese presidency, urging immediate action against politicians and members of the security institutions accused of inciting and escalating violence within communities.
In a stirring address, Yakani highlighted the troubling trend of politically motivated violence across various regions, asserting that the actions of state governors, ministers, advisors, and security personnel are contributing to rising tensions and communal strife. “Most of the deadly communal violence in our communities is politically motivated,” he stated, emphasizing the need for accountability among those in positions of power.
Yakani warned that ongoing political machinations are undermining efforts to resolve disputes amicably, leading to rising tensions, especially in areas like Magwi County, where recent events threaten to erupt into violence. He called on President Salva Kiir and other high-ranking officials to take urgent steps to intervene and stabilize the situation before it escalates further.
“The development in Nasser County and Upper Nile raises concerns about the unification of our forces. If they are not unified, why are we undermining the unification efforts?” Yakani asked, urging leadership from the presidency to ensure that security forces are cohesive in their efforts.
Yakani pointed out that some politicians appear to thrive on the chaos, fueling violence to maintain their political relevance and garner attention. “They survive through the blood of our own people,” he lamented, calling for a meeting of the presidency to address these pressing issues and hold accountable those responsible for the turmoil.
With unrest impacting countless lives, Yakani’s message is clear: “Business is not as usual. This year, this communal violence must be stopped.” He reiterated that the time has come for decisive leadership, stating that he and his organization are prepared to name those responsible for the violence if necessary.
As South Sudan grapples with the legacy of conflict and ongoing tensions, Yakani’s call to action serves as a critical reminder of the role political accountability plays in building a peaceful and stable society.
