CEPO Urges for Inclusive Flood Preparedness as South Sudan Government Issues Timely Warning
The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has welcomed the timely warning issued by the South Sudan government’s national Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation to prepare for looming floods. The warning comes based on the IGAD climate change early warning information, with CEPO’s own indicators also signaling the potential for floods.
Executive Director of CEPO, Mr. Edmund Yakani, emphasized the need for the national parliament to discuss and prioritize the country’s preparedness for early response and prevention of potential flood shocks. “It is essential for our lawmakers to be proactive in addressing expected climate change impacts,” said Yakani.
Highlighting the importance of inclusive preparedness, Nema Juma, Communication and Advocacy Officer of Light for the World- South Sudan, noted the challenges faced by persons with disabilities during floods. Juma stressed that individuals with disabilities often struggle with mobility and access to safety and essential services during such disasters.
Yakani further emphasized the significance of an inclusive flood response strategy for South Sudan, especially considering the country’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD) and its optional protocol.
In a collaborative effort, CEPO expressed readiness to work with the national parliament to ensure genuine preparedness for effectively responding to climate change shocks. With a focus on inclusivity and proactive measures, the call is to prioritize the protection and support of all individuals, including those who are most vulnerable during times of crisis.
