CEPO Urges Government and Partners to Prioritize Media Support for Flood Mitigation Efforts

The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) is calling upon the government, development partners, and civil society to enhance support for the media in disseminating crucial information regarding flood shock mitigation efforts. Highlighting the importance of flood preparedness and response, CEPO emphasizes the critical need for effective investment in these areas.

In a statement, Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of CEPO, stressed the necessity of timely availability of government funds for flood preparedness and response. Expressing concern over the slow release of the declared national funds amounting to $78 million for these purposes, Yakani underscored the importance of transparency and accountability in the utilization of these funds. He urged for expedited and transparent processes to ensure that the allocated funds are appropriately utilized.

CEPO is advocating strongly for the inclusion of persons with disabilities in the national flood preparedness and response efforts led by the government and development partners. The organization plans to convene a national roundtable discussion on disability inclusion in flood preparedness and response initiatives. Additionally, CEPO is urging stakeholders responsible for flood preparedness and response to prioritize meaningful media coverage of flood-related events, disseminate public messages in local languages, apart from English and Arabic, to reach a wider audience.

Emphasizing the importance of proactive measures, CEPO is calling on the government to take a leading role in flood preparedness and response activities to mitigate the impact of floods effectively. By encouraging collaborative efforts and enhanced media support, CEPO aims to strengthen flood resilience and community engagement in addressing flood shocks in the country.
