CEPO Urges Speedy Action from Political Leadership for Successful December 2024 Elections
In response to the statements made by H.E. President and Rt. Hon. Speaker regarding the upcoming December 2024 elections, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Mr. Edmund Yakani, emphasized the importance of timely preparation for the elections.
He stressed the urgency for political leadership at both levels to expedite critical actions to ensure a conducive environment for the electoral process.
Mr. Yakani highlighted the key decisions needed from the leadership to facilitate smooth conduct of the elections, stating, “The call for timely conduct of December 2024 elections is what citizens want, but the time for preparing the country is running out faster. Adequate funding for election-related bodies, declaration of open civic and political space, and completion of transitional security arrangements are essential steps.”
He further outlined the specific actions required from the national parliament, including quick enactment of proposed amendments to security laws without additional restrictions, timely establishment of transitional justice institutions, and ensuring adequate financing for electoral processes and constitutional review.
CEPO announced plans to organize two events – a national pledge for peaceful elections and a political dialogue on consensus building for the elections. These initiatives aim to promote non-violent electoral participation and foster a collaborative approach towards ensuring a fair and transparent electoral process.
