CEPO Welcomes Peace Talks Between SSOMA and Tumaini Ensured by Sant’Egidio Community

In a significant development towards fostering peace and stability in South Sudan, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), Mr. Edmund Yakani, has voiced strong support and appreciation for the constructive steps taken by the Sant’Egidio community in organizing peace talks between the South Sudan Opposition Movement Alliance (SSOMA) led by Thomas Cirilo and delegates from Tumaini comprising the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGONU) and opposition representatives, including the chief mediator of the Tumaini Peace Talks.

In response to the positive momentum generated by the dialogue initiative, Mr. Edmond Yakani remarked, “It is a sign of leadership and responsibility for the love of the nation that Thomas Cirilo and his colleagues have demonstrated by responding positively to the call for dialogue with the government and other opposition from the Tumaini process. Using dialogue to seek concrete political solutions for the country amidst political instability is the best and most genuine approach.”

Emphasizing the need for genuine commitment from all parties involved, Mr. Yakani urged the government to demonstrate sincere will and commitment towards a responsible political transitional process. He cautioned against repeating past mistakes of signing agreements without genuine intent, stating, “The culture of signing peace agreements for political mistreatment or undermining opponents must be abolished.”

Addressing the vital importance of pursuing peace through dialogue rather than armed confrontation, Mr. Yakani stressed, “The search for peace in pieces should be taken seriously by the conflicting political class of the political leadership of the country.”

Furthermore, CEPO’s advocacy efforts have been instrumental in pushing for a comprehensive political transitional process in South Sudan. Mr. Yakani highlighted the organization’s dedication, stating, “At least our lobby and advocacy is working towards the realization of a comprehensive political transitional process in South Sudan.”
