Chaos Erupted at Yambio Freedom Square During Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament Match

Chaos erupted at Yambio Freedom Square in Western Equatoria State on Saturday evening during the ongoing Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament Match after Pazuo beat Gangura 2:1.

Eyewitnesses say the chaos emerged after the center referee and the assistant referee disagreed during a penalty call.

“I was surprised to see that one man heading a Peace Building Project at one of the prominent churches was heading violent behavior at Yambio Freedom Square,” an eyewitness said.

“This issue shall only be resolved if we iron out the root causes of all these issues that cause chaos during the match. If not, the upcoming matches shall be another story to tell,” a fan supporting Gangura team remarked.

A Sports Journalist covering the Yambio Inter-Area Football Tournament Match said the chaos was caused by fans of some areas whose teams were knocked out.

“Most of the fans causing havoc, violence, and fighting before the game ends at Freedom Square are from areas that have been beaten and eliminated from the tournament,” Jackson Gaaniko Juakali said.

“Throwing stones, fighting referees, and acting aggressively at Freedom Square is not a sign of strength,” he added.

The tournament is organized by the State Revenue Authority in collaboration with the Yambio Local Football Association.

Efforts to get a comment from the organizers were not immediately successful.
