Chief of Kadiang Boma Shot and Wounded by Raiders in Duk County
The people of Duk County have been left reeling by a recent incident in which the Chief of Kadiang Boma of Duk Payuel payam in Duk County was shot and wounded by the alleged Murle raiders. The attack took place at 9:30 am on December 29, 2023, approximately one kilometer outside Kadiang settlement. The Chief sustained a gunshot wound to his thigh, and the bullet used by the attackers appears to have been poisonous. Tragically, the victim succumbed to his wound early this morning, even as plans were underway to evacuate him via a UNMISS plane.
This incident is just one in a series of attacks carried out by the Murle in various counties of Jonglei state, including Duk, Twic, Bor, Akobo, and Wunroor. These attacks have resulted in the deaths and maiming of numerous individuals, as well as the abduction of thousands of children. In Duk County alone, over the past three months, approximately 49 people have been killed, 15 people wounded, 50 children abducted, and about 3,000 livestock stolen.
Despite continuous reports from Duk County authorities and appeals for assistance by the Duk Youth Association in Bor and Juba, as well as the Member of Parliament representing Duk County in the National Assembly, the situation remains dire.
The senseless violence inflicted by the alleged Murle raiders has had devastating consequences for the communities in Jonglei state, leaving families shattered and livelihoods destroyed. Efforts to address and mitigate these attacks must be urgently prioritized to prevent further loss of life and suffering.
