Civil Society Activist Encourages Visiting Leaders to Prioritize Sudan Peace Mediation

In a recent statement, Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), appealed to visiting heads of states to focus on achieving lasting peace in Sudan during their meeting with President Salva Kiir Mayardit in Juba.

Yakani emphasized the importance of a collaborative effort to address the crisis in neighboring Sudan, urging President Salva to play a key role in facilitating peace talks. He called for an inclusive mediation framework that considers the welfare of all Sudanese citizens, rather than the interests of conflicting parties in the nation.

Highlighting the shared history and political instability experienced by both South Sudan and Sudan, Yakani stressed the need for genuine efforts to alleviate the suffering of Sudanese refugees in the region. He urged General Bruhan to recognize the interconnectedness of the two nations, recalling the unity that existed prior to South Sudan’s independence.

As a South Sudanese activist, Yakani expressed hope that the meeting between President Salva and his counterparts would lead to tangible outcomes in promoting peace and stability in Sudan. He underlined the significance of involving key stakeholders, such as the rapid support force and the Egad special envoy to Sudan, in the mediation process.

In conclusion, Yakani reiterated the importance of fostering a conducive environment for peace talks that prioritize the well-being of Sudanese citizens above political factions. He called for a united effort towards creating a peaceful and inclusive future for both Sudan and South Sudan.
