Concerns Grow Over Delay in Political Decisions Ahead of 2024 Elections: CEPO Urges Timely Action
Mr. Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO), addressed members of civil society and citizens in Pariang, the seed of Ruweng administrative area, to discuss pressing issues regarding the upcoming elections scheduled for December 2024.
Yakani highlighted the frustrations and concerns raised by citizens with regards to the delayed political decisions impacting the preparation for the elections. He emphasized the need for timely actions to create a conducive environment for the electoral process.
“The citizens are questioning why our top political leadership consistently delays crucial decisions that are essential for the successful conduct of the elections in December 2024. The unification of forces and ensuring an open political and civic space are critical factors that cannot be overlooked,” Yakani stated.
He further amplified the citizens’ voices, urging world leaders to take note of their growing frustration and dwindling trust in the election process if timely political decisions are not made promptly.
Yakani stressed the importance of establishing necessary electoral institutions, such as the National Election Commission, to ensure smooth preparations for the elections. He highlighted the citizens’ desire to participate in a free, fair, and peaceful election that truly represents their voices and aspirations.
“In order to gain the trust and confidence of the citizens, our political leadership must act decisively and promptly to address the concerns raised. Time is running out, and the citizens deserve to exercise their right to vote in a conducive and transparent electoral environment,” Yakani urged.
As the countdown to the 2024 elections continues, the call for timely political decisions and concrete actions to facilitate a smooth transition from violence to peace remains a top priority for CEPO and the citizens of Pariang.
