Conjunctivitis Outbreak in Nimule, Magwi County of Eastern Equatoria State

In response to the outbreak of conjunctivitis (Red Eye Disease ) in Nimule, Magwi County, the Ministry of Health for The Republic of South Sudan issued a statement urging the public to remain calm but vigilant.
According to Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng Juach, Minister of Health for The Republic of South Sudan, “The Ministry of Health is actively monitoring the situation and taking necessary steps to control the spread of the disease.”
The outbreak, which originated among travelers from Uganda, has seen a total of 382 suspected cases screened and managed as of 16th April 2024. Cases have also been reported in Juba.
Dr. Jane Atem, a health official in Nimule, emphasized the importance of promoting personal hygiene and sanitation measures to prevent the spread of the highly contagious viral conjunctivitis.
“We urge the public to practice good hygiene, avoid contact with infected individuals, and seek medical attention if experiencing symptoms,” said Dr. Atem.
To contain the outbreak, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with partners and local health departments, is implementing measures such as strengthening surveillance, treating affected individuals, and raising public awareness about the disease and prevention methods.
The Ministry urges the public to adhere to preventive measures, including frequent handwashing, avoiding contact with infected persons, refraining from sharing personal items, and seeking medical help if showing symptoms.
At-risk populations in schools, universities, prisons, and IDP/Refugee camps are advised to report any suspected cases to the national hotline or the nearest health facility.
The Ministry of Health reminds the public to stay calm, follow hygiene protocols, and seek medical assistance promptly if needed to curb the spread of conjunctivitis in the region.
