During the celebration of the International Day of Nurses and Midwifery at the Kator Primary Health Care Center, Hon. Ayaa Benjamin Warrile, Minister for Gender, Child and Social Welfare, representing the Minister of Health, emphasized the crucial roles nurses and midwives play in society.
“We must create conditions that encourage more men to join the nursing profession,” She said.
Rev. Janet Michael, the Director General for Nursing and Midwifery at the Ministry of Health, stressed the importance of practical work in nursing and midwifery. She urged all nurses and midwives to adhere to principles and ethics and continue supporting their communities.
Dr. Ademola Olajide, UNFPA country representative, highlighted the significant contributions of nurses and midwives beyond clinics and hospitals.
“Nurses and midwives are pillars of our community, inspiring trust, fostering resilience, and promoting the well-being necessary for building prosperous societies,” He stated.
President of the South Sudan Nurses and Midwives Association, Mr. Repent Khamis George, expressed excitement over the government’s recognition. He commented, “This is the most exciting news of the year for us. As we celebrate the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife, there is nothing bigger.”
International Nurses Day (IND) is celebrated globally on May 12, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth. This year’s theme, “The Economic Power of Care,” emphasizes the strategic investment in nursing for economic development, peace, and societal well-being.
Investing in nursing is key to creating decent jobs and alleviating poverty, especially for women and girls. By improving pay, working conditions, and career opportunities in nursing, women can be empowered, lifting them out of poverty while contributing significantly to societal well-being.
Additionally, the midwifery model of care is recognized as environmentally friendly, using fewer resources, reducing waste, and having a minimal ecological footprint. The role of midwives as a vital climate solution is crucial in addressing climate change challenges and building resilience in the healthcare system.
The call to empower healthcare providers, particularly midwives, is emphasized to effectively address climate change challenges in healthcare. The empowerment includes ensuring an enabling environment, knowledge equity, and representation and influence for midwives in decision-making processes.
The government, partners, civil society organizations, and the public are urged to advocate for investment, resources, autonomy, and a seat at every decision-making table for midwives to further strengthen the healthcare system.
This recognition of the critical roles of nurses and midwives reflects a pivotal moment in supporting healthcare professionals and improving overall health outcomes in society.
