Journalists at The City Review and Al-Hagiga Newspapers Stage Industrial Action Over Low Pay
By Denilson Denike
In a statement released today, journalists working for The City Review and Al-Hagiga Newspapers have come forward to address the recent changes in editorial content within the publications. The national staff expressed deep concerns over the alterations that have seen an increase in stories sourced from online sources, a departure from traditional editorial policies.
The journalists revealed that they have been engaged in an industrial go-slow since July 24, 2024, to draw attention to the pressing issue of low payment structures within RAK MEDIA, the company that oversees the newspapers. Despite presenting written requests for a salary increase, the staff claim to have faced intimidation and resistance from management.
Highlighting the disparities in remuneration between expatriate and national staff, the journalists pointed out that while expatriates enjoy comprehensive benefits including salaries upwards of USD 2500 along with various allowances, national staff are reportedly paid less than USD 100 in South Sudanese Pounds.
The national staff stressed that due to currency depreciation and economic challenges, their current salaries have become insufficient to meet their needs. They have urged management to review and adjust their salaries accordingly, emphasizing the importance of valuing the efforts of all staff members.
In their collective statement, the journalists reaffirmed their commitment to engaging with RAK MEDIA to ensure fair treatment and recognition of the contributions made by the national staff. They declared their intent to continue the industrial action until their grievances are adequately addressed.
Signed by all journalists working for The City Review and Al-Hagiga Newspapers, the statement dated July 29, 2024, underscores the determination of the staff to stand united in pursuit of equitable treatment and respect within the organization.
