President Kiir Addresses Nation Amid Rumors of Instability, Reaffirms Commitment to Peace
November 28, 2024 – Juba, South Sudan- In a reassuring message to the citizens of South Sudan, President Salva Kiir Mayardit addressed the nation regarding recent rumors of unrest at the army headquarters and emphasized the security and stability of the country. The president’s message comes in the wake of panic and uncertainty that gripped the capital following allegations of tensions within the military.
On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, misinformation circulated on social media suggesting that the military—specifically the South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF)—was facing internal discord. In response, President Kiir issued a public statement aimed at quelling fears and reinforcing confidence in his government.
“Our army is intact, and together with other security agencies, they are discharging their patriotic duty effectively,” President Kiir declared, dismissing the rumors as unfounded propaganda designed to disrupt the peace achieved since the signing of the Revitalized Agreement in 2018. “The beneficiaries of war and instability are behind these rumors,” he noted, asserting that those who thrive in chaos are disappointed by the current state of peace and are attempting to sow discord among citizens.
The president reiterated his commitment to dialogue as a means of addressing the nation’s differences, stating, “I have said it time and again that our country will not return to war. We will embrace dialogue to resolve our differences.” This sentiment is a critical reminder of the importance of peace-building and reconciliation in a nation with a history of conflict.
In his message, Kiir urged citizens to continue their daily lives and to reject the false narratives being spread by those he described as “warmongers.” He stressed the importance of remaining vigilant against misinformation, encouraging people to focus on collective efforts to build a prosperous South Sudan.
“I appeal to you to go about your businesses, so we can collectively build our beautiful country. Learn to defy these rumors, never take them seriously, because they are lies,” he emphasized.
Ending his address with a note of hope, President Kiir invoked divine blessings for the nation, saying, “May God bless you, may God bless the Republic of South Sudan!”
As the country continues to navigate the aftermath of decades of conflict, President Kiir’s message aims to foster a sense of unity and resilience within the populace, promoting a shared commitment to peace and development. While the road ahead remains challenging, the insistence on dialogue and reassurance of military stability may play crucial roles in maintaining peace in South Sudan.
