President Kiir, EU Envoys Discuss Preparation for General Elections

In a meeting held on January, 16th, 2024, President Salva Kiir Mayardit and European Union (EU) Special Envoys discussed the preparations for the upcoming general elections scheduled for December 2024. 

The meeting, which took place in Juba, aimed to ensure a peaceful and inclusive electoral process.

Following the meeting, EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Dr. Annette Weber, addressed the press, emphasizing the need for all parties involved to work together to maintain peace, protect human rights, and create a conducive environment for the elections. 

Dr. Weber also stressed the importance of empowering the National Electoral Commission to ensure that the elections are free and fair.

During the press conference, Minister of Cabinet Affairs, Dr. Martin Elia Lomoro, expressed confidence in South Sudan’s ability to hold the general elections on time. He reassured the public that the necessary preparations are being made to ensure a successful electoral process.

The discussions between President Kiir and the EU Envoys highlight the commitment of both parties to a democratic and transparent election. 

It is hoped that these discussions will pave the way for a peaceful and fair electoral process, allowing the people of South Sudan to choose their leaders freely and democratically.
