President Kiir Reaffirms Commitment to Democratic Elections in Meeting with UNMISS Chief
In a meeting held on Tuesday,16th January 2024, President Salva Kiir Mayardit provided reassurance to the Head of UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Nicholas Haysom, regarding the government’s commitment to implementing the Agreement and ensuring the country is prepared for the upcoming democratic elections scheduled for December of this year.
President Kiir emphasized the importance of conducting free and fair elections,
“We are fully dedicated to upholding the principles of democracy and providing our citizens with a transparent and inclusive electoral process. The December elections will be a significant milestone in our nation’s journey towards stability and progress,” He stated.
UNMISS Chief Nicholas Haysom expressed the United Nations’ readiness to support South Sudan’s transition to democratic elections.
“The UN stands ready to provide the necessary assistance and guidance to ensure a successful electoral process. We are committed to working closely with the government and other stakeholders to promote a peaceful and inclusive election,” Said Haysom.
Cabinet Affairs Minister, Dr. Martin Elia Lomoro, echoed the government’s commitment to delivering transparent, free, and inclusive elections to the people of South Sudan. He emphasized the importance of building trust among the population and ensuring that everyone’s voice is heard.
“We are determined to create an enabling environment that fosters political participation and guarantees the integrity of the electoral process,” he said.
The upcoming democratic elections in South Sudan are seen as a crucial step towards consolidating peace and stability in the country.
