President Salva Kiir Mayardit is set to host a consultative meeting of Sudanese leaders in Juba
This came during a meeting with the visiting members of the Sudan’s Popular Congress Party led by Dr. Ali El Haj on Friday.
The Sudanese political crisis erupted in October 2021 when the military, led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, seized power in a coup, overthrowing the civilian-led transitional government. The coup sparked widespread protests and international condemnation.
Regional and international efforts have been underway to resolve the crisis and restore civilian rule in Sudan. The African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN) have called for the release of political detainees, the lifting of restrictions on media and civil society, and a return to constitutional order.
President Kiir’s initiative to host the consultative meeting in Juba is seen as a significant step towards facilitating dialogue and negotiations among the Sudanese factions. South Sudan has a history of mediating and facilitating peace processes in the region, including the 2018 peace agreement that ended the civil war in South Sudan.
The upcoming meeting in Juba is expected to focus on key issues related to the Sudanese political crisis, including the release of political prisoners, the formation of an inclusive transitional government, and the drafting of a new constitution. The meeting will also address the need for security sector reforms and the provision of humanitarian assistance to affected populations.
The international community has expressed support for President Kiir’s initiative and urged all Sudanese parties to engage in constructive dialogue and negotiations to find a peaceful resolution to the crisis. The successful outcome of the meeting could pave the way for a transition to civilian rule and stability in Sudan, contributing to regional peace and security.
