President of Yambio Local Football Association Appeals to Betting Companies for Football Support

The President of Yambio Local Football Association (YLFA), Ndepi, has issued a strong appeal to betting companies in Western Equatoria State, urging them to provide financial support and football gear to local teams.

Speaking during the celebration and trophy handover to Nile City FC, who were crowned champions of the South Sudan Cup on Sunday, Ndepi expressed concern over the lack of support from betting companies, despite the large sums of money the community spends on betting.

“The youth are pouring their hard-earned money into these betting companies, yet they do not give back to the community,” Ndepi said. “I call on all betting companies to support football in the state, as this will promote sports and encourage the growth of local teams.”

Ndepi further called on the state government, particularly the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports, led by Minister Simbi, to support Nile City FC as they prepare to represent YLFA in both the local league and the South Sudan Cup national competition for the 2023-2024 season.

“I am appealing to the state government to stand behind Nile City FC in their preparations for the national competition. This team needs all the support it can get to make our state proud,” he added.

He also urged Nile City FC to remain focused and train rigorously ahead of the national competition, cautioning them against complacency after their recent victory.

In response, the Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports pledged the Western Equatoria State government’s support, promising to organize a fundraising initiative to provide Nile City FC with the necessary funds for transportation and accommodation in Juba.

“We will organize a fundraising event to support Nile City FC. The board members are already tasked with preparing for it,” the minister confirmed.

Representatives from Maridi County, under the Maridi Sub-Local Football Association, also voiced concerns about the challenges teams face when traveling to Juba, particularly the lack of adequate financial support from the state.

“I urge the state government and the president of YLFA to visit and support all sub-local football associations in Western Equatoria State. This will encourage the teams and help uncover more football talent in the region,” a representative from Maridi said.

These remarks were made during the South Sudan Cup final celebration at Yambio Freedom Square, where Nile City FC proudly received their trophy.
