South Sudan Takes Proactive Measures Against Looming Floods With Formation of Preparedness Committee

In a groundbreaking move to address the imminent threat of floods in South Sudan, the national government has formed a floods preparedness committee, garnering commendation from various stakeholders including the Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO).

Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO, hailed the establishment of the committee as a timely response to the looming floods. He emphasized the importance of adequate financing from the government to ensure effective flood response measures are in place.

The focus on protecting vulnerable groups, such as persons with disabilities, was highlighted by Ms. Nema Juma, Communication and Advocacy Officer of Light for the World South Sudan. She stressed the critical need for inclusive planning within the floods preparedness committee.

This proactive stance by the government comes in the wake of warnings from the IGAD climate change unit regarding the impending floods. The recent record-high water levels in Lake Victoria have raised concerns about potential widespread flooding affecting millions of people in the region.

Deputy Minister of Information Jacob Maiju Korok outlined the government’s commitment to addressing the flood risk, stating that the committee will develop emergency preparedness plans and submit budget recommendations for ministerial review.

In addition to flood preparations, the cabinet also approved funding for South Sudan’s basketball team to participate in the upcoming Olympics in Paris, demonstrating the government’s support for sports development in the country.

Furthermore, progress has been made in discussions with Kenya regarding the construction of the Juba–Kapoeta–Nadapal road link, a project aimed at enhancing trade activities between the two countries.

The formation of the floods preparedness committee and other government initiatives underscore a proactive approach to safeguarding communities and infrastructure against the looming floods, signaling a strong commitment to disaster preparedness and response in South Sudan.
