South Sudan Vice President and UK Ambassador Discuss R-ARCSS Extension and Flood Relief Efforts

In a significant meeting held on Tuesday, 17th September 2024, in Juba, South Sudan, the Vice President of the Republic of South Sudan, H.E Gen. Taban Deng Gai, engaged in discussions with the Ambassador of the United Kingdom, H.E. Guy Warrington. The meeting aimed to address the extension of the R-ARCSS transitional period and strategize relief efforts for the flood-affected regions in the country.

Expressing concerns over the proposed two-year extension of the transitional period, Ambassador Guy Warrington questioned the Vice President on the necessity and effectiveness of this extension compared to previous ones. In response, H.E. Gen. Taban Deng Gai reassured the Ambassador that the extension was crucial for implementing pending aspects of the Revitalized Peace Agreement, emphasizing the importance of completing essential tasks to ensure a smooth transition towards free, fair, credible, and peaceful elections.

Furthermore, discussions also revolved around the devastating impact of flood disasters across several parts of South Sudan. Ambassador Warrington sought insights from the Vice President regarding the repercussions of these floods on the infrastructure of affected areas. H.E. Gen. Taban Deng Gai underscored the urgent need for humanitarian assistance in providing essential services such as food, health support, and WASH programs to alleviate the effects of the floods. He highlighted the significance of increased law enforcement measures and community awareness initiatives to promote peaceful coexistence among displaced and neighboring communities, thereby mitigating potential conflicts.

In a pledge of continued support, Ambassador Guy Warrington affirmed the United Kingdom’s commitment to assisting the Republic of South Sudan in various spheres, including health, welfare, and humanitarian aid. This gesture of solidarity reinforces the collaborative efforts between the two nations in addressing pressing challenges and fostering stability and progress in South Sudan.
