South Sudan’s Military Quashes Rumors of Tension and Leadership Crisis Amidst Political Uncertainty

The South Sudan People’s Defense Force (SSPDF) has stepped in to quash online rumors suggesting that Military Intelligence (MI) Chief, General Stephen Marshall, has been suspended amid escalating tensions in Bilpam. Major General Lul Ruai Koang, the spokesperson for the SSPDF, described these claims as “entirely false” and stated that there is no current unrest in the area.

The misleading rumors suggested that General Marshall faced an official suspension from his position ordered by Chief of Defense Forces, General Santino Deng Wol, allegedly in connection with an assassination attempt on former spymaster, General Akol Koor Kuc. Koang confirmed that Marshall has not been suspended or detained, calling the online chatter “baseless rumors spread by warmongers” intended to incite panic.

This unfounded report surfaced following a violent incident in Juba, where heavy gunfire claimed the lives of four individuals, including two soldiers and two civilians. Residents were advised to remain cautious and limit their movements as tensions were rumored to be on the rise.

In a separate yet concerning development, political sources hint at a major shake-up in South Sudan as President Salva Kiir is allegedly preparing to step down after nearly twenty years in power. Rumors indicate that Kiir may appoint an acting president within days, with Benjamin Bol Mel touted as a potential successor. Speculation continues that Kiir could stage a pretext for a medical trip abroad, which would allow Bol Mel to assume control temporarily.

However, insiders caution that this transition may not unfold smoothly. There are fears that Bol Mel could initiate a soft coup, possibly leading to a declaration of a state of emergency, which would suspend parliament and potentially invalidate the Revitalized Agreement and the constitution.

Several prominent military figures and politicians, including Gen. Deng Wol, Minister of Defence Gen. Chol Thon, and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, are reportedly on a list of individuals who may be targeted for house arrest should the political situation escalate.

Authorities have yet to provide a formal comment regarding these turbulent rumors, leaving residents on edge as they navigate uncertainty. Amid these unfolding events, citizens are strongly encouraged to remain vigilant and prioritize their safety.
