SSPDF Issues Stern Warning to Officers Involved in Political Interference
November 28, 2024 – The South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) have issued a strong warning to military officers associated with the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) regarding their involvement in partisan politics. Lt. Gen. Garang Akol Ayii, Director General for Procurement and Co-chairman of the Joint Defense Board (JDB), expressed serious concerns over this disturbing trend.
In a press statement released today, the SSPDF highlighted that officers awaiting the unification of the second echelon of command have been increasingly involved in political affairs and using social media platforms for potentially harmful expressions. The directive comes after consultations with the SSPDF Chief of Defense Forces, who also serves as Co-chairman of the JDB, emphasizing the negative repercussions such activities could have on military cohesion and professionalism.
“The SSPDF is dedicated to maintaining a political neutral stance, and any participation by its officers in political activities undermines the integrity of the armed forces,” Lt. Gen. Ayii said. “We are urging these servicemen to immediately cease any engagement in partisan politics and refrain from harmful social media behaviors.”
The statement further outlined that non-compliance with these orders will lead to disciplinary action, which may include forfeiture of the opportunity for integration into the organized forces.
“The integrity and discipline of our forces is paramount, and we cannot allow personal political ambitions to interfere with our primary duty to safeguard the peace and security of South Sudan,” Ayii added.
The SSPDF stresses that maintaining a clear boundary between military responsibilities and political discourse is crucial for ensuring stability within the country’s armed forces. The military hierarchy urges all servicemen and women to focus on their duties and to uphold the values of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces.
As tensions continue to rise in the political landscape of South Sudan, the SSPDF’s warning serves as a clear reminder of the importance of military neutrality and the potential consequences for those who cross the line into partisan politics.
