The Urgent Need for Government Accountability in South Sudan

It is evident that the government of South Sudan has failed to effectively manage its staff, leading to a multitude of issues across various sectors. This has resulted in a growing trend of individuals seeking employment in non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and the private sector, as they offer more stability and better working conditions.

One of the most alarming consequences of this mismanagement is the dire state of healthcare in the country. In Juba Teaching Hospital, healthcare professionals are overwhelmed and have limited time to attend to patients. This has tragically resulted in unexpected loss of lives, as patients are unable to receive the timely and adequate care they desperately need. It is clear that the government’s inability to maintain its healthcare staff has had devastating consequences for the population.

The education sector is also suffering greatly due to the government’s negligence. Teaching staff frequently go on strike, demanding payment for their services. This has led to a decline in the quality of education and a detrimental impact on the learning experience of students. It is disheartening to see the potential of future generations being hindered by the government’s failure to prioritize the payment of teachers’ salaries.

Insecurity and instability persist throughout South Sudan, despite the efforts of security forces. Major towns and villages continue to experience high levels of insecurity, as the army and organized forces are not being paid their regular salaries. This lack of financial support has undoubtedly contributed to the rise in crime rates and the overall feeling of unease among citizens. It is imperative that the government takes immediate action to address this issue and ensure the safety and well-being of its people.

The economic situation in South Sudan is dire, with citizens facing extreme difficulties in their daily lives. The prices of commodities continue to rise, making it increasingly challenging for individuals to afford basic necessities. The government’s failure to maintain staff in business regulating institutions has resulted in traders and businessmen setting their own prices, further exacerbating the financial strain on the population. It is clear that urgent measures need to be taken to stabilize the economy and alleviate the burden on the people.

As we approach the 2024 general elections, the future of South Sudan remains uncertain. Will the citizens continue to suffer under the current government, or will there be a genuine improvement in social and economic services, as well as nationwide security? The answer to this question lies in the government’s ability to take responsibility for its actions and be held accountable for its failures.

It is high time for the government of South Sudan to prioritize the well-being of its people. This can only be achieved through proper management of staff, ensuring timely payment of salaries, and addressing the pressing issues in healthcare, education, security, and the economy. The citizens of South Sudan deserve a government that is committed to their welfare and actively works towards improving their lives. It is crucial that the government takes immediate action to rectify the current situation and provide a brighter future for its people.
