Tragic Loss in Upper Nile: Maj. Gen. Majur Dak Dies Amid Evacuation Efforts in Nasir County

The Office of the Commissioner of Nasir County has released a statement addressing the recent tragic incident that led to the death of Maj. Gen. David Majur Dak, the commander of the South Sudan People’s Defense Forces (SSPDF) stationed in Wechyar-Adiu. The loss comes amidst complex evacuation efforts facilitated by South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, in collaboration with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).*

On March 5, tensions escalated in Nasir County due to clashes with local armed groups known as the White Army, leaving Maj. Gen. Dak and his bodyguards trapped in tanks. In response, Dr. Machar’s administration worked diligently to secure the evacuation of the stranded forces. Initial efforts on March 5 were hindered when UN helicopters were unable to complete the airlifting, prompting a continued commitment from local authorities and the SPLA-IO command.

As of March 7, Commissioner Ruon G Jock and SPLA-IO security personnel took proactive measures to minimize civilian presence in the vicinity and facilitate a smoother airlift process. During this time, the local youth were urged to vacate the area to allow the evacuation operation to proceed safely.

Tragically, as evacuation plans appeared to be progressing, the situation escalated. Following the successful landing of a UN helicopter at approximately 11:00 AM on March 8, the security team tasked with transporting Maj. Gen. Dak encountered chaos. In an unfortunate turn of events, guards believed to be left behind opened fire, resulting in the General’s untimely death and a UN crew member being caught in crossfire.

In the press release, the Commissioner’s office expressed profound sorrow over the loss, stating that the circumstances surrounding Maj. Gen. Dak’s death were not premeditated and had left the local authorities and SPLA-IO command in a state of deep regret. They extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the late general as well as to the family of the UN crew member.

The statement underscored the commitment of the Nasir community to uphold the revitalized peace agreement, emphasizing the need for unity and reconciliation in the face of ongoing strife. “Our commitment as citizens of this great country is to refrain from waging senseless war against ourselves so that peace and harmony can be achieved,” the statement concluded, invoking a call for tranquility among the people of South Sudan.

This tragic incident marks a stark reminder of the ongoing struggles faced in South Sudan, particularly in Upper Nile, as communities grapple with the lasting consequences of conflict.
