Western Equatoria State Legislative Assembly Takes Three-Month Recess

The lawmakers of Western Equatoria State Legislative Assembly have been granted a three-month recess, as announced during the closing ceremony on Wednesday. Speaker Hon. Wakile Charles expressed gratitude for the dedication and hard work of the Members of Parliament and acknowledged the challenges they faced during their extended working period.

Despite the challenges, Speaker Wakile outlined several achievements of the State Legislative Assembly, including the revision of Conduct of Business Regulations, formation of assembly business committees, passing of the Western Equatoria Policy Statement, and the conduct of numerous sittings resulting in the passage of resolutions, speaker orders, and bills.

However, the Speaker also highlighted various challenges faced by the assembly, such as insufficient staff, non-payment of operation costs, lack of service and transport for assembly members, and outstanding payment issues.

In response, Speaker Wakile presented a way forward, which included the deployment of staff to the assembly Secretariat, consideration for the payment of operational costs, maintenance of vehicles for key officials, and requests for transport facilities for the assembly members.

Governor Alfred Futuyo emphasized the importance of lawmakers working closely with the community to address their challenges and encouraged them to make the most of their time during the recess by engaging with citizens.

As the lawmakers prepare to take their break, Governor Futuyo revealed that 50 million was allocated to support the 100 legislators, who were appointed by President Salva Kiir Mayardit in 2021. The Governor also mentioned that the assembly will resume its sessions once the renovation and furnishing of the assembly hall are completed.

The renovation of the assembly building has been ongoing since last year, and Governor Futuyo expressed optimism that the three-month recess would allow for the completion of the building works, ensuring a conducive environment for the lawmakers upon their return.

The three-month recess provides an opportunity for the lawmakers to reconnect with their constituents and recharge before returning to continue their legislative duties in Western Equatoria State.
