CEPO Executive Director, Mr. Edmund Yakani, held a meeting today with Norwegian Special Envoy to South Sudan, Excellence Jon Anton Johnson, to discuss the country’s preparedness for the upcoming elections. The main focus of the meeting was to ensure that the elections are peaceful and democratic.
Several key points were discussed during the meeting, including the need for national funding for the elections and the process of constitutional making. It was also emphasized that the unification of forces is crucial for the creation of a single defense and security sector.
One of the main concerns raised by Mr. Yakani was the importance of inclusive conduct of the elections, which would allow for unrestricted open political and civic space. He highlighted the need for political leaders to hold a meeting of the presidency to discuss the inclusive political parties dialogue, which would help make key decisions for the extended transitional period of 24 months.
Mr. Yakani also stressed that there is no appetite among citizens for an extension of the transitional period if the country’s leadership fails to hold elections. He suggested that the formation of a technocrat government through inclusive political processes is a practical option in such a scenario.
It was agreed that the constitutional making process should be driven by the people, ensuring their active participation and involvement in shaping the country’s constitution.
The meeting between Mr. Yakani and the Norwegian Special Envoy highlighted the importance of creating a conducive environment for the forthcoming elections in South Sudan, with a focus on inclusivity and democratic principles.
