Global Freedom of Press Commemorated: CEPO Director Calls for Respect of Journalism

In a statement marking World Press Freedom Day, Edmund Yakani, Director of the Community Empowerment for Progress Organisation (CEPO), extended his appreciation to journalists and media houses for their dedication and risk-taking in upholding press freedom.

Yakani emphasized, “Press freedom is essential for sharing opinions, thoughts, and access to information. It plays a crucial role in promoting democracy, good governance, and the rule of law.”

He urged leaders to recognize the importance of press freedom, stating, “The media acts as a vital tool for expressing values that contribute to societal growth. Legal frameworks such as media and access to information acts are crucial in ensuring these freedoms.”

Yakani also addressed concerns about human rights activists facing threats and imprisonment for expressing dissenting views. He highlighted specific cases, including that of Morris Mabior and  Biar Ajak  among others  who have been targeted for their critical activism.

Expressing hope for dialogue and non-confrontational approaches, Yakani called on authorities to respect human rights and the rule of law. He made a heartfelt plea for the release of detained individuals, urging President Salva Kiir to pardon those unjustly incarcerated for exercising their right to free speech.

Yakani emphasized the importance of upholding press freedom for a democratic society that respects human rights, emphasizing the need to celebrate independence without individuals languishing behind bars for expressing their opinions.

  1. Yakani hasn’t been persistent on public concerns. He looks like attention seeker in some points.
Sometimes He looks like government agent.
Why is it difficult for him to hire the lawyers that will followed the cases of detained activists?
I argue Yakani to be persistent and transparent on defending activists.
