Western Equatoria State Secures UNMISS Support for Gbudue Stadium Renovation
By Jackson Gaaniko
In a bid to revitalize sports infrastructure, the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sports in Western Equatoria State has announced plans for the renovation of Gbudue Stadium in Yambio with support from the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
Hon. David Simbi Pauloni, the State Minister of Culture, Youth, and Sports, revealed that discussions have been initiated with UNMISS to explore the refurbishment of the stadium under the Quick Impact Program. The aim is to restore the facility to a state where it can once again host sporting events. A local contractor has been engaged to assess the extent of the damage, providing essential information for future renovation efforts.
Engineer Nelson Abass of Hipai Construction Company conducted a thorough technical evaluation of the stadium, identifying critical issues such as the lack of proper structural support for the roofing system and inadequate foundation preparation. Abass recommended specific measures, including the installation of sliding gates and the use of durable materials, to ensure the longevity and safety of the renovated facility.
Key officials, including Director General Mr. Koro Silvano, Administrator Madam Mary Pio, and Director of Sports Mr. Silvestor Ruati, participated in discussions at the Ministry to outline the renovation strategy and coordinate efforts with UNMISS.
Gbudue Stadium, initially constructed during the tenure of Hon. Jemma Nunu Kumba as governor of Western Equatoria State, has fallen into disrepair due to years of neglect and natural elements. The damaged roof, wall fence, and gates have rendered the stadium unusable for hosting games and public gatherings, impacting the activities of the South Sudan Football Association and local government events.
The collaboration between the Western Equatoria State Ministry and UNMISS signals a new chapter for Gbudue Stadium, promising a revitalized venue for sports and community engagements in the region. The renovation project holds the potential to reinvigorate the local sporting scene and provide a much-needed space for various events once completed.
