Citizens’ Plea for Political Stability: A Call from CEPO at Nairobi Peace Talks
In a heartfelt message conveyed at the Nairobi peace talks, Edmund Yakani, the Executive Director of the Community empowerment for progress organization (CEPO), representing civil society delegates, urged political leaders to prioritize the interests of citizens over personal agendas for a successful political transition in South Sudan.
Expressing concern over the prolonged political instability since 2013, Edmund emphasized the urgent need for political will and commitment to steer the country towards peace. He highlighted the erosion of trust and confidence among political factions as a major obstacle hindering progress.
“We urge our political leaders to embrace the Tumaini Initiative as a non-violent solution to our country’s challenges,” stated Edmund, underscoring the worsening economic conditions faced by citizens. The depreciation of the South Sudanese pound, escalating prices, and rising poverty levels paint a grim picture of the current situation.
Drawing attention to the plight of families struggling to make ends meet, with children resorting to begging on the streets, Edmund appealed to leaders to rise above personal interests and prioritize the well-being of the populace. He warned against using the Tumaini Initiative for selfish gains and stressed the importance of making decisions that benefit the nation as a whole.
“It is time for our leaders to show maturity, nationalism, and a genuine commitment to serving the people,” Edmund urged, calling for a collective effort to avert further suffering and restore hope among the citizens.
As the peace talks continue in Nairobi, the message from CEPO serves as a poignant reminder of the pressing need for unity, cooperation, and selfless leadership to navigate South Sudan towards a brighter future.
