Ethnic Targeting of Balanda in Western Equatoria: A Recipe for Renewed Violence

The current situation in Yambio and other areas of Western Equatoria State is disturbingly reminiscent of the events of December 2013 in Juba, where ethnic targeting resulted in significant loss of life. Today, the Balanda people are under siege, facing arbitrary arrests, looting, and killings, actions seemingly motivated by the removal of Governor Alfred Futuyo, a prominent figure from the Balanda community.

This pattern of violence is deeply concerning. It risks igniting ethnic divisions, undermining the peace and stability that South Sudan urgently needs. If political affiliation were the sole driver behind these attacks, why are Balanda members of the SPLM-IG being targeted in Tombura? This wave of violence strongly suggests that ethnicity, rather than political alignment, is being used as a pretext for persecution.

It is crucial to recognize that not all Balanda are members of the SPLM/SPLA-IO. Attributing political allegiance based on ethnic identity is dangerous and unjust. Such assumptions fuel resentment, deepen divisions, and create conditions for prolonged conflict. South Sudan has already suffered immensely from repeated cycles of violence. Allowing history to repeat itself in Western Equatoria will only further destabilize the nation.

Authorities must act swiftly to prevent further bloodshed. Security forces must ensure the protection of all citizens, irrespective of their ethnic background. Leaders, both political and community, must call for restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue. South Sudan cannot afford another crisis stemming from ethnic targeting. The nation’s future hinges on unity, not division.

The critical question is this: will South Sudan learn from its past, or will it allow history to tragically repeat itself?
