Jonglei State Suspends New Boma Establishments and Inaugurations Pending Further Notice

Jonglei State has announced a suspension on the establishment and inauguration of new Bomas across the region. The directive, issued through Administrative Order No. 01/GOJS/B/DGO/2026, comes into effect immediately upon signing by the Deputy Governor.
The order, signed on April 29, 2026, by Deputy Governor Wilson Awuol Gaijang, cites the authority granted by the Jonglei State Constitution Article 103 (a) 201 as amended, along with Presidential Decree No. RSS/RD/3/30/2026. The decision follows consultations with the Governor of Jonglei State and aims to regulate the development of local settlements during a period of review.
In the statement, Deputy Governor Gaijang emphasized that the suspension is a precautionary measure to ensure proper planning and stability within the region. “This order is necessary to assess the implications of establishing new Bomas and to ensure they align with our development policies,” he stated.
The suspension applies to all efforts aimed at setting up new Bomas, which are traditional settlement centers, until further notice from the authorities. The government has not specified when the ban will be lifted, indicating that further assessments and consultations are underway.
