Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Attends Nile-Council of Ministers Meeting in Burundi

The Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of the Republic of South Sudan, Hon. Pal Mai Deng, recently participated in the Extra-Ordinary Nile-Council of Ministers meeting in Bujumbura, Burundi. The meeting, known as Nile-COM, focused on discussions related to countries’ commitments, contributions to the Nile Basin Initiative (NBI), and the status of the Cooperative Framework Agreement (CFA).

Following the meeting, Minister Pal Mai Deng thanked the government of Burundi for hosting the Nile Regional Day and expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality extended to him and his team during their visit to Bujumbura.

During his address at the 18th Nile Day celebration in Burundi, Minister Pal Mai Deng emphasized the importance of transboundary water cooperation under the NBI. He highlighted the success of NBI projects such as the Rosumu hydropower project and the Limur/Nyimur Multi-purpose Water Resources Development project, which have benefited countries in the region.

Minister Pal also stressed the significance of environmental sustainability and climate change adaptation in the Nile Basin region, urging continued support from development partners and donors for NBI initiatives.

The Minister’s participation in the Nile-COM meeting and his remarks at the Nile Day celebration underscore South Sudan’s commitment to cooperation, regional integration, and peace among the Nile Basin countries.
