South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir Confirms Military Casualties Amid Rising Tensions in Upper Nile State

In a somber address to the nation, President Salva Kiir Mayardit has confirmed the loss of General Majur Dak Thel and several military personnel during a violent encounter in Nasir County, Upper Nile State. The president’s statement comes amid escalating tensions following a planned redeployment of government forces that was mischaracterized as a disarmament operation.
As tensions mounted in the area, a meeting was convened on March 3 between President Kiir and First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar, during which Machar pledged his commitment to defuse the situation. However, on March 4, government forces stationed in Nasir faced an unexpected assault from the Sudan People’s Liberation Army in Opposition (SPLA-IO), despite assurances from Machar that such an attack would not occur.
According to President Kiir’s statement, General Thel and his remaining troops resisted the attack, leading to a standoff. Following the violent clash, Dr. Machar reportedly called General Thel, urging his surrender, a request that was firmly rejected. The situation escalated as the UN attempted rescue operations amidst active gunfire, which ultimately led to further loss of life.
“Today, we mourn the loss of brave men who served our nation with honor,” President Kiir remarked, expressing condolences to the families of the fallen soldiers. Only two of the UN helicopters managed to take off with survivors before coming under heavy fire again.
President Kiir has called for calm across the nation, emphasizing the government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability in South Sudan. “Let no one take the law into their own hands,” he urged, reiterating his administration’s resolve to navigate the crisis without escalating into further conflict.
While the details surrounding the incident continue to unfold, the President’s appeal for peace reflects the fragile state of unity within South Sudan, a nation marked by its turbulent history of conflict and political strife.
“My condolences go to the bereaved families. They have died in the service of our nation, and they shall forever remain in our hearts,” he concluded.
As the nation grapples with these troubling developments, the international community is watching closely, hoping for restraint from all parties involved and a commitment to the peace process.
