In a dramatic turn of events, Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni has played a pivotal role in the ongoing political crisis in South Sudan, overshadowing the efforts of the African Union (AU) Panel of Wise. The AU delegation arrived in Juba on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, with the intention of meeting the detained First Vice President Riek Machar. However, their efforts were thwarted by President Salva Kiir, who refused to allow the meeting, viewing Machar as a criminal under investigation for the killing of General Majur Dak Thel in March this year.

President Kiir’s decision to block the AU delegation’s access to Machar has been seen as a significant setback to the AU’s efforts to salvage the fragile peace agreement in South Sudan. The peace agreement, which has been teetering on the brink of collapse, was hoped to be reinforced by the intervention of the AU Panel of Wise. However, Kiir’s stance has cast a shadow over these efforts, leaving the AU leadership in a state of uncertainty regarding the escalating situation.

Unverified information has surfaced suggesting that President Museveni and President Kiir have reached a consensus that Machar should undergo due legal process for his alleged involvement in the killing of General Majur Dak Thel. This agreement between the two leaders has effectively overridden the wisdom and recommendations of the AU Panel of Wise, who were sent to the country to mediate and de-escalate the political tensions.

The killing of General Majur Dak Thel has been a contentious issue, with accusations and counter-accusations flying between the factions. Machar’s arrest and subsequent detention have further inflamed the already volatile political landscape in South Sudan. The AU Panel of Wise, known for their diplomatic acumen and conflict resolution expertise, had hoped to leverage their influence to bring about a peaceful resolution. However, their efforts have been stymied by Kiir’s unwavering stance.

President Museveni’s involvement in the situation has added a new dimension to the crisis. Known for his strategic thinking and political savvy, Museveni’s decision to support Kiir’s view that Machar should face legal proceedings has been interpreted as a move to ensure stability and justice in the region. Museveni’s wisdom, as perceived by many, has taken precedence over the AU’s diplomatic approach, highlighting the complex interplay of regional politics and international diplomacy.

The AU leadership now faces the daunting task of navigating this intricate political landscape. With Kiir and Museveni standing firm on their position, the AU’s role in mediating the crisis has been significantly diminished. The future of the peace agreement hangs in the balance, and the international community watches closely as events unfold.

The political tension in South Sudan has reached a critical juncture, with President Museveni’s wisdom overshadowing the efforts of the AU Panel of Wise. As the situation continues to evolve, the focus remains on whether the legal proceedings against Machar will bring about justice and stability or further exacerbate the conflict. The coming days will be crucial in determining the trajectory of South Sudan’s political future.
